Chapter 20

“Which way is that?”

“No idea.” Fi fumbled with the car’s built in sat nav and found the tourist spot. The wheel of waiting turned on the screen as it recalculated the route and Fi tapped her foot as she waited.

Can you stop that? I’m trying to sleep back here, now it finally doesn’t itch.

“I have to do something. There!” Fi pointed at the screen, causing Mort to swerve the car. He cursed and regained control as they hurtled towards a bush.

“I can’t turn round here!”

Fi stared up at the hedge that loomed higher than Mort’s four by four along the lane. There weren’t any passing places and the track was barely wide enough for his large car, let alone to turn around and Fi had no idea what on earth were they meant to do if they met an oncoming vehicle.

“Just keep going then, it’ll reprogram itself soon.” Fi clenched her hands into fists and kept them on her lap. Her instinct was to fiddle with the sat nav, but if she lost control of her power, she might blow the car battery and then they’d go nowhere.

Calm yourself. I can’t sleep with you fussing.

Fi was about to tell her familiar where she could go sleep when Mort spoke. “Why are we going to Land’s End?”

She glanced at the doctor. Mort hurtled the car down the narrow roads, and Fi turned her face to the screen grateful she didn’t have to drive. His jaw tensed as he navigated the lane as quickly as he could, grimacing whenever a branch scraped his car. Shaking her head, she focused on the phone.

“Right. There’s an attack, happening now. We have to get there and find the fairy stone before someone gets hurt.” Fi cursed as the live stream of screeching piskies cut out. “Bloody internet down here.” She gripped her phone and waved it around, as if that would somehow pick up a signal.

Through the sketchy connection, Fi monitored the situation as the car sped towards Land’s End. No deaths. So far. The sat nav did indeed reprogramme itself once it realised they were ignoring it and got them back on some sort of main road, or at least not a road that looked like it might lead to another realm, and Mort accelerated. Mort skidded the car to a stop in a car park and they stared at the mega swarm circling around the cliff.

People crouched low in their cars, hiding away from the angry creatures, but there were others in bright cagoules fleeing down the coastal path.

“We have to help.”

“OK.” Mort swallowed. “What’s the plan?”

“Protect the people and find the fairy stone. Try not to get killed.”

He nodded. Fi paused, one hand on the door handle, and turned to Mort. She planted a kiss on his lips. “Don’t get killed. Cressida, find that stone.”
